This quilt is being made for a family who lost their young son last year in a tragic accident. Their son loved his jeans so they wanted this quilt to reflect his personality and taste. We have even decided on a dark maroon border and backing, which was his favorite color.
In addition, I am adding 'pops' of color with his favorite brown striped shirt
as well as by adding his favorite shorts. One is a pair of swim trunks and the other two are knit mesh basketball shorts.
Since the basketball shorts are knit and stretchy, they have to be treated with a fusible non-woven backing for added stability and strength.
When I make a memory quilt I always like to include holes and stains, put there by the person who owned the clothing because those marks are reminders of that person and their life. I always find stains and wear marks so interesting in my quilts, such as in the square below...
